North Morowali The commemoration of Earth Day 2026, carrying the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” has become an important moment to strengthen commitment to environmental preservation. In North Morowali Regency, this commitment was realized through concrete actions in the form of greening initiatives and environmental clean-up efforts. The activities were organized by the North Morowali Regional Environmental Agency together with several companies and environmental communities in Tokonanaka Village, Bungku Utara District, on April 18–19, 2026.
Cross-sector collaboration became the main strength of this activity. In addition to the local government, the North Morowali Environmental Agency (DLH) partnered with the “Anak Alam Morowali” community and was supported by various companies, including PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI). A total of 25 participants were directly involved in this participatory action, which was focused on creating tangible impact.
The Head of HSE Corp at PT GNI, Thomas Nicholas, stated that this activity reflects a concern for the environment that is not only a social responsibility but also a trust that must be upheld together. “We hope that the small steps we are taking today can make a real contribution to preserving the Earth in the future,” he said.
He added that this Earth Day momentum serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the environment through various real initiatives that create broader impacts—not only for the company but also for the community. “We believe that good operations must go hand in hand with efforts to maintain the balance of nature,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Head of the North Morowali Environmental Agency, Syarifudin, expressed appreciation for the involvement of the private sector in the activity.
“The North Morowali Regency Government is very grateful for and appreciates the participation of PT GNI and several other companies in commemorating Earth Day through the planting of productive trees and plastic waste clean-up actions. This shows strong collaboration between the local government and the corporate sector in efforts to preserve the environment,” he said.
He also emphasized that this year’s Earth Day commemoration has a strategic goal in building collective awareness. “The implementation of this Earth Day activity aims to increase awareness among environmental communities, the private sector, and the public about the importance of environmental preservation. In addition, the planting of productive trees not only serves as a greening effort but is also expected to provide economic benefits for the community, especially on Tokonanaka Island,” he added.
During the activity, a total of 50 productive trees were planted, consisting of local durian, avocado, and langsat. The selection of these plant types was based on two main benefits: as an effort toward greening and to provide economic value for the community in the future.
This approach aligns with the concept of Agroforestry, which integrates environmental conservation with improving community welfare through sustainable harvests.
In addition to tree planting, the activity also included a plastic waste clean-up action along the coastal area of Tokonanaka Island. This initiative serves as a concrete step in reducing marine pollution while also raising public awareness about the importance of waste management—especially plastic, which poses a serious threat to coastal ecosystems.
Through sustained collaboration between the government, private sector, and the community, it is hoped that environmental conservation efforts in North Morowali will continue to grow and provide tangible benefits for future generations.
